First thing’s first- it’s really HOT here. I know, I could be complaining about the cold or anything else, but truly, it’s hot. We are definitely back in Texas now. The past week has had regular triple digit heat, and some hail and tornadoes touching down up north. Funny thing is that I don’t mind the hail or tornadoes much, just this heat. I guess I’m an AC kinda gal. Well, and tonight I figured out that I’m like a little palmetto bug- once it gets this hot, I get speedy. Good to know!
So we just played a couple of fun shows- the other night at Sam’s Burger Joint with our good friends The Black Crabs, who drove all the way down here from Seattle to play music and sweat with us. And tonight at Roadhouse Rags here in Austin, again with The Black Crabs.
They sound great, as always. They started us out the other night for happy hour at Sam’s, after which we played inside the main hall with The Black Squirrels from Omaha (they were something), Billy Morgan (also something), and Lil Bit and the Customatics. Unfortunately we were fourth on the bill, and what with all the heat, the room pretty much emptied out before we got to the stage. Thank God for our good friends Linda, Darryl, Deb and Gabe for sticking around and seeing us through the night. Even folks who usually come to see us wherever we play around San Antonio and Austin ended up leaving by the time we played. It was just that hot.
Tonight was just as hot, but a lot more fun. Roadhouse Rags is like a smaller version of the Oaks- which we sorely miss- with a great little stage, sweet vintage clothing shop, and incredible live recording set-up so you can get instant CD’s of the live show. That’s pretty cool.
The Black Crabs started us out again, I joined them onstage for a song, and Los Jazz Vatos played some amazing Texas Tornadoes-type tunes in between. Those guys are truly talented. Jorge had a pick-up gig with Robert Banta at Headhunters, so we played a kick-ass fast and furious set, then loaded him out and on his way. It was pretty wild. Sweat was pouring off of us by the time we finished. Yay for the breeze that kicked up, really. I decided that Roadhouse Rags needs a slip-n-slide or at least some kiddie wading pools. Next time maybe…?!
Ok then, we get to rest up for a few weeks, then you can catch us at the Austin airport, where I believe there’s AC, I’m so excited… See you down the road friends, and until the next time, keep on rockin’!
